How to Best Represent Your Inspirational/Spiritual Book
Many people today have found a way of thinking or way of life that is bringing them more peace and, perhaps, greater success, and they want to share it with the world. So they package their secrets to sell. The result might be a book of inspirational messages, spiritual passages, or a daily guide to happy living. Some authors create books that might be considered spiritual memoirs. Others write self-help or how-to books teaching the concept they’ve discovered and adopted. I’ve edited several such books and helped many of these authors fine-tune their book proposals.
Do you need an agent for your inspirational or spiritual book? If you work within the field or area of your book (you teach self-hypnosis or conduct workshops on an aspect of your proposed book, for example), if you are a frequent presenter at conferences nation- or worldwide, if you have done other writing on this topic, and if you are known by thousands of people (either within this field or as a celebrity), then yes. You could probably garner the attention of a major publisher and you should have an agent working on your behalf.
If, on the other hand, you have never been published, you do not consider yourself a writer, you are not involved in social media, you have no background related to the theme of your book, and you have few affiliations, you probably won’t be able to attract an agent. If you hope to work with a well-respected publisher, you’ll most likely have to prove yourself and your project before he’ll consider it. It’s possible. Others before you have successfully done so.
You may know of people who have created a brand through a company, organization, or even a concept related to spiritual self-improvement, for example, or established an empire teaching a unique thought process. Once they are established, then comes the book. A book from this author could be a major publisher’s cup of tea, and the author would definitely seek agent representation.
If you’re interested in the branding process, you could build your brand any number of ways. Start by establishing a blog, a website, and a social media presence. Sure, there are millions of blogs, websites, and social media pages out there, and most of them go ignored. But this doesn’t have to be your experience. Do a major Internet search to find other sites related to inspirational and spiritual messages. Visit those blogs and websites and take note of the site owner’s techniques and methods. Pay close attention to those sites that are most active—the bloggers post regularly and they attract a lot of visitors and comments, for example. Leave comments and ask to be a guest blogger or to be interviewed.
Spread the word at these blog sites and related websites, as well as at your Twitter, Facebook, etc. pages about your blog and your website once they’re up and running. Post often, post messages that relate to your prospective book’s theme, and keep your site interesting and useful to your proposed audience.
